Swiatowy, Colleen

Welcome to a new school year! We are excited to start the year with our schoolwide theme- "Get in the Game!"
I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child, full of learning and fun. Please take some time to read about things that happen in our classroom each week. Our classroom newsletter will also be available (under Class Files) every Friday. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Class Routines and Announcements
Yerkes Observatory Family Nights
Families, you are invited to sign up for the Yerkes Observatory's Family Night programs for students in grades 4-8 at this link:
http://astro.uchicago.edu/yerkes/outreach/activities/pd/fnp.html.
Below is a description for the next family night event.

Thursday, February 23, 2012   6-8pm
Comets! Comets! Comets! Have you ever made a comet? Come to the Family
Night at Yerkes Observatory and make a very cold fizzing comet model! Learn
about how comets orbit the Sun and how their sand grain size debris creates
meteors (shooting stars). We will observe the starry sky if the weather is
clear, so please dress warmly.

Winter Wear
As winter weather begins, please remind your child to "wear all five" to school each day. These five items include a warm coat, snowpants, boots, hat, and gloves/mittens. It is important for students to be dressed for the weather!
Character Education
Each day we learn and live the Six Pillars of character:  trustworthiness, respect, caring, responsibility, fairness, and citizenship.  Your child's agenda has some wonderful ideas to reinforce these character traits at home.
Central-Denison is starting an exciting new recess program this year, the  FAIR PLAY zone.  At every recess a Fair Play Supervisor will lead an engaging, active game with any and all students who wish to join.  The Supervisor will be on hand for the entire game to organize the game, help students choose teams, and facilitate any conflicts that may arise.  Along the way, students will learn new games as well as new skills for how to resolve disputes so they can have more fun in a cooperative way.  The Fair Play zone is open to all students each recess and will be maintained as a safe and bully-free place for students to play.
Agenda
Each night, please go over the agenda with your child.  If your child has completed the day's homework, please sign the agenda.  The agenda is a great way for us to communicate about your child's homework and progress.
Your child should be reading at least 20 minutes every night. Please record your child's reading minutes in the agenda.
Also, please look over all papers that come home on Fridays. Once you have done this, please sign and return the Friday paper packet form that is found in your child's folder every week. Thank you!
